Fanc reunion with Cosmopolis
Translated in English by TSU&N admin
It may be part of the 65th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, the new film by David Cronenberg, Cosmopolis, and the main actor is Robert Pattinson. An unexpected but promising collaboration, where the Twilight star plays a billionaire who drives through Manhattan in a limo high technology, premise of a self-destructive odyssey.
Fnac: What is your motivation for the adaptation of Don DeLillo's novel?
David Cronenberg: The dialogues. Reading the book, I thought I'd love to hear from the lips of excellent actors. And from the cinematographic point of view, was a wonderful challenge to shoot in a limousine in motion. I asked my team to see the movie Das Boot and Lebanon, two films made in isolated places. It's quite liberating to have a scenic structure as rigorous as that requires rethinking the traditional approach of cinema, not only in relation to the movement of the camera but also in relation to the choreography of the performance.

Fnac: The choice of Robert Pattinson to play Eric Packer surprised the media. But that makes sense.
David Cronenberg: The Casting is an occult art. This is a hugely important job as director. You can kill your film, even before the shooting, by a poor choice of cast. And yet there are no instructions to guide you. I felt that Robert Pattinson had the charisma needed to portray a man neurotically strange, powerful yet immature, developing before us during the journey that crosses through the film. Eric is not a lovable character, and I needed an actor who had no fear of that. But it is fascinating, hypnotic, and these are qualities that an actor possesses or lacks. Robert has them.
Fnac: Power, alienation, self-destruction ... you say that Eric Packer is about your characters before?
David Cronenberg: The characters bright and self-destructive are my favorites. They emit an aura, and the shock is so destructive, if not entertaining. I am perpetually curious, and sometimes surprised by our attitudes as human beings and the human condition in general.
Fnac: You used to be rejected by the Cannes audience, and then finished as president of the Jury. What has changed?
David Cronenberg: It took a while that critics and the public understand what he was trying to do. This is why it is important to have a long career, from your previous films highlighted first and over time, the viewer of your work becomes a little universe that makes sense for everyone: a creative sense of the month.

Contact Fnac: What was your first reaction when you offered the role of Eric Packer?
Robert Pattinson: I read the script a year ago and thought I had absolutely no chance of getting a role in the film, not to mention Eric. And when David (Cronenberg) called me, unexpectedly, was more than surprised! It was definitely one of the most exciting and demanding that I read.
Contact Fnac: You said your experience on set was a kind of 'madness'. What did you mean exactly?
Robert Pattinson: I could not compare it to something that had cast before. The script included some very unusual stylistic ideas and I think nobody really knows how to approach this type of material. You know, it is rare to work with a director who allows his film to evolve at this point, organically.
Contact Fnac: Are there any other directors that you would like to work?
Robert Pattinson: Too many to name them all. But there are French directors including Jacques Audiard, for example, who have made outstanding films
